The History of Liverpool Football Club

Posted by admin on

As one of the most successful football Club in England, Liverpool FC was established in 1892. It was founded after an internal dispute in Everton FC, between the president of Everton FC, John Houlding who was also a brewer and leaseholder of the Anfield Ground and the Everton FC committee. The dispute was over the running of the club and the Perspective of the Committee that Houlding had political and financial agenda. The dispute saw Everton FC moving from Anfield to Goodison Park with the other group adopting the name Liverpool and remained in Anfield.

After the first year, the debuted in the Football league and they won a promotion to the first division. Despite this, they were still under Everton’s shadow since many people did not want to watch the Scotsmen playing. In their first season in Division 1, they struggled and were relegated division two, where they played well under John McKenna. Due to determination and commitment, they won their second title in the second division and they were promoted to the first division where they finished fifth above their rivals Everton FC.

Their first win in the championship was in 1900/01 and two years later they were relegated. They worked hard in the Second division and came back to win their second championship in 1904/05. The directors gave them a reward by building, for the fan, the legendary Spion Kop, which meant Vantage point in Afrikaans and symbolizes the hill where many Liverpool residents died when they attempted to lift the Siege of Ladysmith. 1928 saw the expansion and roofing of the stand that would provide cover for 30,000 fans.

After the First World War, Liverpool FC won two titles but started performing poorly after World War 2, even though they become second to Arsenal in the 1950 FA Cup finals. In the 1953/54 season, it held the last position and it was relegated. It continued to perform badly until 1959 when Bill Shankly took over. He was the manager for the next 14 years and Liverpool became the greatest football club in England. In 1963/64, Liverpool won their sixth championship and the next year they won the FA Cup when the beat Leeds in the Final. They also won the 1965/66 league title and stayed for about 7 years before wining another title. In the 1972/73 season, they won the UEFA Cup and the next season they bagged the FA cup.

Shankly handed over the managerial position to Bob Paisley who steered Liverpool FC to win the 1975/76 UEFA Cup. The next season they failed to get the treble after winning the League and the European cup but losing to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

From then on they have been managed by Joe Fagan who was the manager at the time when the riot in Heysel Stadium broke out and a wall collapsed, and the English Football Clubs were indefinitely banned from European Football. Their previous manager, Raphael Benitez led them to win the European Cup in 2005 and FA Cup in 2006. They are currently under Roy Hodgson who took over the managerial position from Benitez in July 2010.
